Cryopods and Croyfridge Ark Survival Evolved

The Cryopod and Cryofirdge have just received some updates in Ark Survival Evolved that make it much easier to see what dino is inside, and its stats.  The cryopods are somewhat controversial among some because they make certain aspects of the game much easier, too easy for some.  A recent poll on my Fat Frogs Swamp youtube channel shows most of the respondents like the cryopods a great deal, but 5% think they broke the game. Cyro sickness, explained below, is one of the ways the devs have tried to balance the cryopods in Ark.

Crafting Cryopods

Cryopods must be crafted in an obelisk, loot crate, supply crate, or tek replicator.  You will need to be level 51.

Cryopod resources

10 Crystal
15 Fiber
5 Hide
2 Metal Ingot
4 Oil 8 Polymer, or organic polymer.

Cryopond spawn command cheat gfi cryopod 1 0 0

Crafting Cryofridge

The cryofridge is crafted in the same location as the cryopods above, but you will need to be level 88.  The cryofridge must be powered by electricity and will make the cryopods last indefinitely.

Cryofrigde Resources

25 Crystal
15 Electronics
225 Metal Ingots
60 Polymer or Organic Polymer

Cryofridge spawn command cheat gfi CryoFridge 1 0 0

Cryosickness

After you release a dino from the cryopod there is a sort of buffer period that lasts 500 seconds.  If you release another dino(s) during that time the creature will experience cyosickness, which puts them to sleep for a long time, making them very vulnerable to wild dinos and hostile players.

The Refining Forge and Industrial Forge in Ark Survival Evolved

Ark Survival Evolved Refining Forge
Refining Forge

You won't get far in Ark Survival Evolved without a refining forge.  The humble refining forge is needed to convert raw metal and scrap metal into metal ingots, so you can craft useful items.  It is also needed to make gasoline. The refining forges are small and don't take many resources, and no rare ones. Industrial forges are bigger in every way.

Resources to Craft A Refining Forge

  • 125 stone
  • 5 flint
  • 65 hide
  • 20 wood or fungal wood
  • 40 fiber

If you have a large tribe or just big ambitions then you need a lot of metal made into metal ingots.  So you either need a lot of refining forge or one gigantic industrial forge.  In Ark, the industrial forge runs on gasoline only.  It processes raw metal into ingots in batches and with amazing speed compared to the refining forge.  The industrial forge will make gasoline just like a small one, and so, makes its own fuel. It will also burn wood into charcoal, which is very handy if you require large quantities of gunpowder for your Ark adventures.

While the Industrial Forge is expensive and huge, you will get a lot more out of it, than the more expensive Industrial Grinder.  Even though I am a solo player, late in the game I will build an industrial forge, rather than operate 3-5 refining forges.  It makes even more sense in single player since your metal won't be refining into ingots when offline.

The Industrial Grinder In Ark Survival Evolved: Is it worth it?

The industrial grinder in Ark Survival Evolved is a high costly item that you are only able to craft late in the game.  It doesn't make anything useful, it turns already crafted items, structures etc., into their raw resources.  You get fewer resources back then was put in when they were crafted.

Reasons to craft the industrial grinder

1) You are part of a large tribe on PvP server and frequently loot bases and gather of surplus stuff you don't need, but are still valuable in their raw material

2) You constantly collect items from loot drops and have a crazy collection of ascendant Paracer saddles and don't even have a Paracer.  That's me.

3) You want to make a video or blog post about the industrial grinder That's me too.

Most people who play Ark aren't ever going to need an industrial grinder, but some of you will find yourself in a large tribe and collector of expensive but useless items.  So...

What resources are needed to craft the industrial grinder?

3,200 metal ingots

2,000 crystal

600 cementing paste or achatina paste

600 oil

600 polymer, organic polymer, or corrupted nodule

gasoline to run it

a lot of room at your base

A survivor at level 64 and above

OUCH!  That is a lot of resources, you, or your tribe are going to need to harvest or loot a lot of resources to build one.  You may have to build an industrial forge to get all that metal. For most, the industrial grinder is too expensive to make. It just isn't worth grinding out all those resources for what you get back.  I built one out of curiosity and to write this post and make a video.  I habitually visit loot drops and supply crates and get great gear that I will never use, but I just put that stuff in the grinder and I can't hit that grind all button.  My ascendant Paracer saddle goes right back in the vault.

Soups and Stew Recipes in Ark Survival Evolved

Ark Survival Evolved has several useful soups, stews, and other recipes that are very useful in the game whether you are playing PVE or PVP.  They can be used in combination with one another, although some of the effects will cancel each other out.  For crafting purposes, the recipes all have two things in common they all require water and must be crafted in a cooking pot or industrial cooker.  You don’t need to learn engrams for any of these or find the recipes. Just put the right ingredients in the cooker, automatically make the stew, etc.

They all spoil within 5hours in your inventory, but their shelf life can be greatly extended in the preserving bin and refrigerator.  Their effects last 15 minutes (900 seconds), except for Lazarus Chowder, which lasts only 10 minutes (600 seconds).

Simple Bed, Bunk Bed and Sleeping Bag in Ark Survival Evovled

One thing you can't live without in Ark Survival Evolved is a fixed spawn point.  For one of those you need a hide sleeping bag, simple bed, or bunk bed.  Without they you will have to spawn in a random location of a region, which could be far from you resources and very close to danger, which is something you definitely don't want when you have weapons and armor.  All of these items can be named so they are easy to identify on the respawn screen.

In addition to using beds as spawn points you can use them to fast travel to any point on the map where you have another bed.  The main drawback of this is that you have to take off all your armor and deposit your entire inventory before you travel, so you had better have a spare set of weapons and armor waiting for you by the other bed.

Hide Sleeping Bag

This is simple to craft and the engram is available to learn at level 5.  The main problem with them is they only work once.  However you can put them down anywhere there are no obstructions.  They are great on an adventure to a dangerous cave or near an enemy base when your tribe is going on a raid.

25 - hide
15 - fiber

Simple Bed

This is the best of the three for general use.  It must be placed on a foundation and has a cool down time so if you die shortly after respawning you won't be able to use it for awhile.  That problem is easily solved by putting down multiple beds.  The nice thing is you can place them right on top of one another.

15 - wood
80 - thatch
30 - fiber
40 - hide

Bunk Bed

Bunk Beds look really cool, but they are super expensive to craft for what you get out of them.  Their only advantage over the simple bed is they have half the cool down time.  It is much cheaper to craft multiple simple beds and place them all in the same spot, save your 320 metal ingots for something important.

80 - polymer
200 - pelt, wool, or hair
320 - metal ingot
280 - fiber
120 - hide

Note: since publishing this post the devs have introduced the Ark Canoe, which can also be used as a spawn point/

How to Craft Grenades In Ark Survival Evolved Game

Grenades can be fun in Ark Survival Evolved and the Ark Scorched Earth dlc.  If you don’t think you’ll ever need them in PVE you are probably right, and may never want to bother with learning any of the engrams.  Luckily, you’ll probably find a few grenades in the supply beacons or perhaps dropped by an alpha dino.  That way you’ll still get to play with them, but for those, you want to destroy their enemies be dinos or players here is what you are going to need to craft them

Grenade
A simple hand grenade you toss at your target and explodes after a delay.  It’s probably the best grenade in the game, but of very limited use in PVE.  I’ve seen some people tear it up with these grenades in Ark Survival of the fittest.  Simple and easy to craft you’re going to need to craft it in a smithy and these resources:
  •  15- fiber
  • 20 – stone
  • 30 – gunpowder
  • 5 – hide
  • 2 – metal ingot
  • 4 – oil
Cluster Grenade

Throw the cluster grenade and it explodes sending out six small grenades over a wide area.  I played around with a few of these I got from supply drops in Scorched Earth.  They are pretty ineffective and I would not bother learning the engram, perhaps they are better in PVP.  In Scorched Earth I have found both half a dozen cluster grenades and blueprints in supply beacons.  To craft one of these guys is pretty darn expensive and your going to need to do it in a fabricator, and because it requires propellant you’re also going to need a chemistry bench, so this is high-level stuff.
  • 50 – gunpowder
  • 10 – crystal
  • 20 – cementing paste
  • 15 – metal ingot
  • 10 – polymer
  • 20 – propellant

Electrical Generator, Lights and Refrigerator Crafting In Ark Survival Evolved

Today in Ark Survival Evolved we craft an electrical generator and a refrigerator and lights to go with it to organize and light the barn at night.  We also take our now dead Ichthy out for its finial swim, poor guy.

To craft an electrical generator is actually not that expensive.  You will need:

25 Metal Ingot
10 Electronics

In order to get power to your equipment you will need electric cables and an outlet.  The outlet has a pretty generous range.  Just place a light or whatever within that range, and it automatically send out a cord to power it.  The generator runs on gas, but seems to sip fuel, at least in single player.  On a server it will have to use gas even while you are not there if you want to keep your refrigerators running.   The lighting I put in really lights up the barn, compared to standing torches, which look cool, but require a lot of maintenance.

Electrical generator: Ark Survival

The second part of the video shows my cool Ichthyisoraus and its untimely death after being swarmed by angler fish and other nasties.  And that is all I want to say about that.   In the next episode I put together an underwater army of megladons and Ichthies.

Ark Survival Evolved Spyglass - The Most Useful Item

I think the most useful non-weapon gadget in Ark Survival Evolved is the spyglass.  The spyglass is a small telescope that magnifies the world at a distance of course, but it also gives you valuable information.  Point it at a dino and it will tell you what it is, its level and whether or not it is mate boosted.  If you’re riding a low level 10 Rex and spot a level 5 and 10 carno in the distance you can take them easy.  If you spot a mate boosted level 50 and 110, both you and your dino are probably going down.  The only drawback of the spyglass telescope is that it can be difficult to use, due to its high magnification.  It takes some getting used to especially when riding on a flyer.

To craft a spyglass you will need these materials:

5 – wood

10 – Hide

10 – fiber

2 – crystal

Crystal can be hard to get early in the game.  I believe it may require a metal pick to harvest, or the chance of getting crystal is very, very low with a stone pick.  No equipment such as a smithy is required to craft the spyglass in the game.

I hope you found this short review helpful if you have you can follow the blog and see: Ark Survival how to, review, tip videos playlist on YouTube.

How to Craft the Simple Pistol and Review in Ark Survival Evolved

Is the Simple Pistol in Ark Survival Evolved worth it?  In my opinion, it’s a fun little gun probably better suited to PVP than PVE.  It is patterned after an 1850’s colt cap and ball revolver.  These guns were very popular in the American Civil War.  In the game, the simple pistol has a removable cylinder, and while the real guns do have a removal cylinder, it really can’t be considered a quick reload.  In the game, the pistols appear to be about three times the size of the real-life gun, and least compared to my survivor.

The simple pistol isn’t really that expensive to craft.  It only requires 60 metal ingots, 5 wood and 15 hide.  It must be crafted in the smithy.  The gun only does 63 damage per shot, but you can fire 6 shots in rapid succession to deal 378 damage before reloading, not too bad.

The only thing that I would say is not really worth it, is the scope on this gun since it is a close-range fast-firing weapon.  Some of the pistol attachments, like the scope or flashlight can be handy. The scope on the long rifle is great, but on the pistol, it is not very useful.  However, there is little reason not to equip it if you just happen to have an extra lying around since it only adds a weight of 0.1.  I liked playing around with the pistol in PVE, but I have to admit that it really isn’t very useful in most day-to-day game situations.  Maybe if I was trying to get through a cave it might be nice to deal some quick damage to titan boa or another creature as it closes the distance and then switch to a sword.

The longneck rifle is probably the best firearm in the game, see video below.
